Films play a significant role in our design process and in the feelings we try to convey through our work. For this design group we pulled inspiration from some of our favorites, including The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut. These films all feature such interesting, ornamental interiors, and well framed compositions. Alongside this, we were also inspired by the lives of artists in hotels, for example the iconic Hotel Chelsea being a stomping ground for Patti Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and so many more. We felt that we could pull interesting elements such as keys, ‘Do Not Disturb’ signs, to signed guest logs, and architectural plans of hotel structures to create our own unique version of a hotel. Our fictional hotel name ‘St. Denis’ is derived from the first building we had our studio in, an incredible Los Angeles landmark constructed in the 1930’s. This group features hotel themed embroidery motifs of characters and objects one might see at the St. Denis Hotel.
