Traditional American folk art is a recurring point of reference for us at Samuel Zelig. This group draws from Fraktur, a decorative tradition developed by the Pennsylvania Dutch in early American communities, known for its use of symbolism, pattern, and narrative imagery. Original artwork is developed in-house and composed directly on the garments, reflecting the way Fraktur imagery was historically arranged on certificates and domestic objects. A new work jacket style features a town scene depicting figures going about daily life, while other pieces incorporate angels, folk florals, and birds; motifs traditionally associated with protection, continuity, and the passage between the earthly and spiritual. Rendered in embroidery, the artwork adds durability, texture, and a quiet heirloom quality to each piece.
